| Q. Do you have NY
plates for sale? A. Sometimes I will have a plate or set of plates that a person is looking for. Right now my main focus is completing my full NY run of plates from all years. I am also trying to get a 1964 dated plate from every state. Occasionally I will list plates for sale on eBay. It doesn't hurt to ask, because I can share your request to the Plate collectors listserve group - a mailing list of about 300 different people. So if I don't have what you are looking for, some other collector may have it. |
| Q. Where else can I
look to find NY plates? A. A good source is eBay. It is where I find many of my plates. You will usually find a pretty good selection there. You could also contact other ALPCA members. There is a page of links of members who have web sites. Go to www.alpca.org and click on "links". Sometimes
you find license plates in antique shops. Most antique
dealers do not know the real value of plates, so their
prices are usually too high. Try to negotiate with the
antique dealer, most times they get license plates when
they buy out estates and clean out garages and barns. |
| Q. Can I register my
antique automobile with old NY license plates? A. Yes! NY allows owners of antique and classic autos to use year-of-manufacture (YOM) plates to register their vehicles. Their use is somewhat restricted, and certain conditions have to be met. The car must be at least 25 years old. The plates must be in original condition (no repainted plates allowed). There must be a pair unless it was a year there was a single plate. The single plate years are 1942-43 (43 tab on 42 plate), 1944 (re-stamped 1942 plate), 1945, 1946, 1947, 1950, 1953-54 (54 tab on 53 plate), 1955-56 (56 tab on a 55 plate), and 1964-65 (65 sticker on 64 plate). The number on the plates must not currently be in use. Contact your local DMV office to check this. You will also have to have certain insurance coverage to register as a classic/historical vehicle.
